Knowledge migrant residence permits in 2026
In 2026, the knowledge migrant procedure will remain one of the most important routes for attracting international talent to the Netherlands. At the same time, the regulations will become stricter: higher salary requirements, stricter controls on employers (including the duty of care, information duty and the obligation to keep and retain records) and adjusted fees.
What is a knowledge migrant?
A knowledge migrant is a highly skilled employee from outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland who comes to the Netherlands to work, meeting specific salary and contract requirements. Only employers who are recognized as recognized sponsor by the Dutch Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) may apply for this residence permit.
The scheme is intended to strengthen the Dutch knowledge economy and enables quick and smooth admission when both employer and employee meet all requirements.
Salary requirements for knowledge migrants in 2026
As of January 1, 2026, new income standards apply, which will be indexed annually. These gross monthly amounts (excluding 8% holiday allowance) apply to all new applications submitted in 2026.
